About Mashed Potato
Mashed potato is a dish made by mashing freshly boiled potato with a ricer, fork, potato masher or food mill. Dehydrated and frozen mashed potato are also available, and instant mashed potato packets are also common.
Most potatoes used for mashed potato have a floury texture but "waxy" ones are also used. To improve the flavour and texture, butter, vegetable oil, milk or cream are usually added. Salt, pepper and other herbs and spices are also used to modify the taste.
Popular ingredients and seasonings include garlic, cheese, bacon, sour cream, parsley, turnip and nutmeg, but are not limited to these!
Mashed potato is used as a part of other dishes including shepherd's pie, cottage pie, pierogi, dumplings, and gnocchi.
